You are invited to join Human Rights Watch and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission for a Brown Bag Lunch Discussion
Tuesday, August 26th
Noon- 2 p.m.
Human Rights Watch
350 Fifth Avenue, 34th Floor
New York, NY
Despite recent gains, including a court decision overturning the Anti-Homosexuality Act in Uganda, and a resolution by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights condemning violence on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, the recognition of basic human rights remains a distant goal for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals throughout much of Africa. Rights activists from the continent will lay out their perspective on the crisis.
Speakers:
Shehnilla Mohamed, Africa regional coordinator, IGLHRC, based in Johannesburg
Graeme Reid, Executive Director for Human Rights Watch's LGBT program
Chalwe Mwansa, Advocacy and Policy Officer, Friends of Rainka, Zambia and IGLHRC Fellow
Michael Ighodaro, Nigerian LGBT Activist and IGLHRC Fellow
Njeri Gateru, Legal Officer, National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, Kenya and HRW Fellow
Admission is free. All are welcome.
RSVP by email to Adam Frankel at frankea@hrw.org. Photo ID is required for building entry.
